Enjoy the dizzying heights of the High Tatras in Slovakia
Overlooking the picturesque towns of Stary Smokovec and Tatranska Lomnica, the mountains of the High Tatras offer magnificent walks and outdoor pursuits for all ages and abilities.
From family-friendly routes that offer a perfect afternoon stroll to multi-day hikes, the mountains really are an outdoor playground. One of the most enchanting elements of any hike are the traditional chatas dotted around the mountains. These traditional huts offer welcoming refreshment, traditional food and accommodation for weary hikers. Altitude and limited space are no barrier to Slovakia’s passion for fantastic food – the chatas offer delicious and spicy cabbage soup, as well as the moreish parena knedl’a; a delicious, sweet steamed bun served warm and sprinkled with chocolate and cinnamon.
There’s a regular electric train that serves the villages nestled in the mountains, offering its passengers a scenic ride through one of Europe’s most beautiful natural landscapes. There is also a quaint vintage electric train that runs regularly and offers an enjoyable day out.
All of the villages have charming cafes and gift shops that will ensure you leave Slovakia with a reminder of the wonderful time you’re sure to have there.
There is also a mountain train, downhill karting, caving and cable cars to enjoy. For children there are trampolines, a land train and archery to entertain. As the evening draws in, there are charming restaurants to dine in and a bar and restaurant with ten pin bowling lanes and a game room crammed with games consoles, table football and a soft play area for younger children.
If a bigger town is more your thing, you can take the electric train down to Poprad and enjoy its large outdoor craft and food market and its modern indoor shopping complex. There is also the wonderful Aquaworld in Poprad that offers a multitude of indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a spa and relaxation centre.
Whatever you do on your trip in the High Tatras, be sure that healthcare is not something you need to worry about by renewing your EHIC in plenty of time.
