A Refreshing City Break In Zurich
The northern Swiss city of Zurich is world renown as a global centre for banking and finance. The largest city in Switzerland is wonderfully picturesque with a lot of its pre-medieval history still deeply engrained into the city. Zurich may be among the top places to visit for a relaxing European break with many areas of natural beauty to breathe in.
Remember that Switzerland are a part of the EHIC programme even thought they are not a member state of the European Union. So it is important to apply for a European Health Insurance Card (for you, your spouse/partner and any children travelling with you). Your EHIC card will then entitle you to free or discounted medical treatment should unexpectedly fall ill or suffer an injury whilst staying in Europe.
Also known as Old Town, Altstadt is the most historic area of Zurich with cobblestone streets, some of the best restaurants and a variety of small stores. There is a wealth of hidden places just waiting to be explored when you visit and well worth every second of your time. It’s easy to feel like you are getting lost but you’ll be surprised with how quickly you find yourself again among the collection of beautiful homes, the chances are you’ll never want to leave.
Zurich’s very own mountain has a tip 2,850 feet above sea level and you can walk to the top or get the S10 train from platform 22 at Zurich main station (you won’t be judged for taking the train). The complete trip can take up to three hours but the incredible views from the top are well worth the reward. If you want to get even higher there is an observation tower which provides a fantastic view of Zurich and the lake. Pack some warm clothes, as even in the summer, the temperature at the top can be quite crisp, but a welcome refresher. There is a little café at the top where you can rest for a cup of coffee and a slice of cake before making the journey back down.
An astounding 25 miles long and 2 miles wide, Lake Zurich is a breathtaking spot for locals and tourists alike. There are many ways to enjoy the splendour of the lake, it’s easy to spend an afternoon by renting a bicycle and cycling around the lake, or in the summer season don’t hesitate to rent a pedalo and venture out across the surface of the clear and refreshing waters. All year round Lake Zurich offers a calm spot to recover and to enjoy a spectacular view from coast to coast.
